Melbourne Institute of Technology Celebrates Strong Research Growth and Academic Excellence

Melbourne Institute of Technology has announced a remarkable surge in research activity, with the institute awarding its first cohort of Master’s by Research degrees and hosting a major international conference that drew researchers from 14 countries. The milestone comes as MIT’s research initiatives accelerate across both Melbourne and Sydney campuses, with 43 students completing research degrees by June 2026 and producing multiple peer-reviewed publications.

The achievements underscore MIT’s rapid emergence as a growing research powerhouse, with academics winning prestigious awards, launching innovative frameworks for artificial intelligence research, and securing funded partnerships with industry leaders. From deepfake detection breakthroughs to groundbreaking work in cyber security and data analytics, MIT’s researchers are tackling some of today’s most pressing technological challenges.

The momentum comes as the institute strengthens its research infrastructure and elevates its academic profile on the international stage. MIT’s successful hosting of the International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Education (ICETE2026) in February attracted nearly 100 participants per day and showcased cutting-edge research across AI, cybersecurity, and digital transformation. Meanwhile, MIT staff have been recognised with outstanding doctoral awards, and the institute has welcomed visiting international scholars for collaborative projects.

Academic Board Update

The Academic Board met on 7 May 2026 to consider a range of matters relating to academic quality, research, learning and teaching, and governance across MIT. This newsletter provides a summary of key discussions and decisions.

Strengthening Academic Governance

The Board reviewed its own performance during 2025 and identified several priorities for improvement. These include:

  • More timely distribution of meeting papers.
  • Increased focus in AB meetings on strategic academic issues.
  • Better communication of Academic Board decisions and outcomes.
  • Continued review of committee effectiveness.
  • Improved administrative support for academic governance activities.

A recurring theme was the importance of ensuring that staff understand how Academic Board decisions influence teaching, learning, research, and student outcomes across MIT.

Artificial Intelligence and Academic Practice

The Board discussed the growing role of generative AI in higher education and the need for a coordinated institutional approach.

Members highlighted the importance of:

  • Supporting staff through access to appropriate AI tools.
  • Providing training and professional development.
  • Ensuring that AI enhances, rather than diminishes, educational quality.
  • Developing clear frameworks for the ethical and effective use of AI in learning and teaching.

Further proposals will be considered at future meetings.

Research Growth Continues

The Executive Dean reported continued growth in MIT’s Higher Degree by Research (HDR) programs. Research supervision clusters now support almost 200 HDR students across Business and Information Technology.

The Board noted:

  • Strong thesis examination outcomes.
  • Continued growth in research culture and seminar activity.
  • Increasing publication activity by both staff and students.
  • Success in attracting external research funding.

Maintaining high-quality supervision and strong student outcomes remains a priority as these programs continue to expand.

Learning and Teaching: Building Student Engagement

The Board considered the findings of the 2025 Course Health Checks and held an extensive discussion on the future of learning and teaching at MIT.

Topics included:

  • Teaching quality and consistency.
  • Student engagement and sense of belonging.
  • Contemporary approaches to learning.
  • The design of classroom experiences.
  • Resources needed to support high-quality educational delivery.

Members agreed that academic success depends not only on curriculum quality, but also on creating an environment in which students genuinely want to participate and succeed. Further work on an overarching educational philosophy will continue during 2026. Read more

Industry Collaboration: HackersJack and MIT

The collaboration between HackersJack and the Melbourne Institute of Technology (MIT) represents a funded research partnership aimed at advancing cyber safety education for young learners. Through this industry-supported initiative, the School of SITE at MIT, led by A/Prof Raza Nowrozy and Prof Savitri Bevinakoppa, is conducting an independent study to evaluate how students develop cyber security knowledge, confidence, and safe online behaviours when using the HackersJack cyber security platform.

MIT is pleased to support research that directly benefits students and schools, generating meaningful, evidence-based insights for educators and the broader community, while maintaining full academic independence and integrity throughout the study.

MDA and MBAnalytics courses accredited by ACS

We’re proud to announce that our Master of Data Analytics (MDA) and Master of Business Analytics (MBAnalytics) courses have officially been accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) — valid through 2027!

This prestigious endorsement recognises the academic excellence, industry alignment, and ICT relevance of both courses, confirming they meet the high standards expected of ICT professionals in Australia.

MDA equips students with in-demand skills in data science, machine learning, statistical modelling, and data visualisation — preparing them for roles like data analysts, engineers, and AI specialists. MBAnalytics focuses on business intelligence, data-driven strategy, and decision-making, leading to roles such as business analysts, consultants, and insight managers.

The MIT Management Team recently participated in the TEQSA 2025 National Conference with the theme Trust, Transparency, Transformation, Australia’s only dedicated sector-focused event centred on assuring quality and integrity in higher education.

This year’s conference highlighted the rapid changes shaping the sector, including technological advancements, shifting demographics and increasing global pressures. Expert speakers and panel discussions explored key points that will influence the future of higher education, such as:

  • How higher education can support Australia in achieving its productivity potential.
  • Ways institutions can apply systems thinking to manage regulatory risks and build trust.
  • TEQSA’s forward priorities and the balance between innovation and regulatory expectations.

Melbourne Institute of Technology launches Equity and Access Scholarships to empower domestic students.

Melbourne Institute of Technology (MIT), in partnership with the MIT Australian Foundation Ltd, is proud to announce the launch of its MIT Australian Foundation’s Equity and Access Scholarships, aimed at easing access barriers and support students facing educational disadvantage. 

These scholarships,  reflect MIT’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing an avenue for all students to flourish and achieve their academic and career aspirations.

Scholarship highlights

Two tailored programs:

  • Equity Scholarships: For students experiencing financial hardship, regional/remote challenges, Indigenous Australian status, disability, or other systemic disadvantages.
  • Merit Scholarships: Recognising academic excellence, leadership, and community engagement.

Financial support: Scholarships cover tuition fees and provide additional assistance to ensure students can focus on their studies.

Who can apply?

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be Australian/NZ citizens or permanent residents.
  • Enrol full-time at MIT.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Meet academic admission requirements.

Equity Scholarship applicants must also demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • Demonstrated financial hardship (e.g., Centrelink benefits, income statements, or other proof of financial disadvantage).
  • Residency in a regional or remote area (ASGC-RA classification).
  • Identification as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
  • Disability or long-term medical condition.
  • First-in-family to attend university.

What does the scholarship provide?

Recipients of the MIT Australian Foundation’s Equity and Access Scholarships will receive financial assistance to help cover the cost of tuition and other study-related expenses.
